News For 2016

Caroline Mitchell

November 12th sees my first anniversary with my publisher Bookouture. When I signed my three book contract for the DC Knight series, I never realised how much my life would change. It’s all very new and exciting, but the best thing about it has been the wonderful people I’ve come into contact with. I’m a typical introvert author. I have no problems chatting people online, but when you put me in a room of people I don’t know, I have to push myself really hard to mingle. It’s totally out of my comfort zone.

But thanks to the wonderful readers, authors, and bloggers I’ve met over the last year I no longer have that fear. I can’t wait to meet them at events, and recently I was fortunate enough to be invited to THE Book Club Facebook party in London. I’ve also got engagements to meet bloggers in December, as well as courses and crime writer’s festivals throughout the UK. I’m confident that my dream of working as a full time author will become a reality in 2016, and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me. It’s a bittersweet celebration because sadly, my mother passed very suddenly in October 2014. It was devastating, and I miss her every day. But I know she would have been thrilled to see how well I’ve done, and I know deep down that she’s still around, watching over us all.

Giveaways & News

A recent trip to Ireland gave me time for reflection, and I’ve planned some exciting things for 2016. I regularly get asked for updates on our true story, Paranormal Intruder, since it was published two years ago. It hit me when I was trying to think of a way I could thank people for their support. Why don’t I publish a short sequel and give it away to my readers? I regularly hold prize draws, but I always feel bad for the people that don’t win. This way, everybody receives an exclusive gift from me. All members of my Reader’s club will get a copy. If you haven’t signed up already, just click here. (I hate spam so I won’t share email addresses with anyone.) Reader’s club members will receive a copy of Paranormal Intruder 2 as soon as it hits the press.

And Finally …

I’ve been working on a new website. One which is easy to navigate, with lots of room for all the books I hope to write. It still needs work so it’s not been officially launched, but if you’d like a sneak peek then here is my Author page. I’ll be advertising it when it’s all ship shape, but I’d love to know what you think in the meantime. As always, shares, comments and tweets to this post are very welcome.

5 Reasons Why We Should Believe The Unbelievable

5 Reasons Why We Should Believe The Unbelievable

My new book Don’t Turn Around was inspired by my real life experiences with the paranormal, and ever since my first experience in 2010, I have been a staunch advocate of spreading the word. But why should people open their minds and step out of the ordinary to believe in the paranormal?

1. It may not be portrayed in the media but there is a huge following in the paranormal world, and most of this following consists of down to earth hard working people like you and me. Sadly, the media quite often mock stories of supernatural occurrences, leaving it much harder for ordinary people to come forward. I was very pleased to see the recent drama The Enfield Poltergeist which portrayed the family involved in a sympathetic manner. It is our greatest wish that our true story is portrayed in the same way.

2. It’s a lot more common than you think. But if people aren’t coming forward, their stories aren’t being reported. We are making very slow progress in gaining respect for paranormal research, and one day it will be widely accepted. But for now the baton firmly remains in our hands. This time last year I was terrified of the abuse I would encounter, particularly given my position as a police officer. Looking back I can see how wrong I was.

3. Because it’s a good thing. Yes we experienced terrifying occurrences which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but think about it. We are not alone, and life goes on – in some form. We are all made up of energy and as any metaphysician will tell you, energy is indestructible.

4. Because the proof is boundless. As spiritual guru Deepak Chopra says, “The strange thing about paranormal is that no matter how often you prove it, it remains unproven.” Witness evidence is key. If  over thirty witnesses testified in court to say they experienced the same thing, it would be deemed solid proof that such an incident occurred. Our case involves priests, police, fire service and more. Conclusive evidence in my opinion. And I’m not the only one.

5. Because only through investigation and research will we have a real understanding of the universe we live in. In the words of author Robin Craig Clark “Our duty is wakefulness, the fundamental condition of life itself. The unseen, the unheard, the untouchable is what weaves the fabric of our see-able universe together.”

Have you had supernatural experiences? Or are you a firm non believer? We’d love to hear from you. Please comment below.

The Enfield Haunting – Is it a Hoax?

The Enfield Poltergeist, recently dramatised on Sky Living as ‘The Enfield Haunting’ is one of the most famous cases of paranormal activity in the world. These events took place in Enfield, North London between August 1977 and 1978, where an innocent family were subjected to prolonged paranormal activity.

“Just before I died, I went blind, and then I had a haemorrhage, and I fell asleep, and I died in the chair in the corner downstairs.”

This is believed to be the voice of Bill Wilkins, a man who died long before the Hodgson family moved into his Enfield, North London home. The family consisted of  Peggy Harper, and her four children, Rose, thirteen, Janet, eleven, Pete, ten, and Jimmy, seven. The voice came through the body of eleven-year-old Janet Hodgson, through her false vocal chords as she was used as a conduit for hours of conversation. Other events included flying objects such as lego pieces, large items of furniture being upturned,  books passing through walls, fires, bangs, ghostly apparitions, recorded conversations and the young girls being thrown out of their beds in acts of  levitation.

This House Is Haunted

This House Is Haunted

Investigator Guy Lyon Playfair wrote a book about it, named This House is Haunted. There was none better qualified to write such it. A member for the SPR, Society for Psychical Research, Playfair and fellow member Maurice Grosse supported the family for over fourteen months, spending many nights at the premises and witnessed paranormal activity on a regular basis. The story became an overnight sensation when covered by a journalist from the Daily Mirror, and later appeared on television. It has recently been made into a TV drama for Sky.

Enfield Case

A succession of witnesses provided statements, including police. Teams of people visited the Enfield home. However doubt was cast when Janet, the main focus of the attention, admitted playing tricks on the investigators. This admission was repeated on an ITN news programme on 12th June 1980 when she stated: “Oh yeah, once or twice [we faked], just to see if Mr Grosse and Mr Playfair would catch us. And they always did.” Playfair continued with his investigation. He knew Janet could not be responsible for the majority of incidents he witnessed first hand.

I met with Guy Lyon Playfair in his London home to discuss the similarities between the Enfield case and our own, Paranormal Intruder. We are pictured above, as he shows me the original poster from the Enfield Gazette reporting the story. Having lived with paranormal occurrences since 2010, it was a relief for me to be able to open up to somebody who understood. Objects passing through walls, disembodied voices, loud banging noises, and household items being thrown were just a few of the similar occurrences we experienced in our quiet rural home. Having spoken to Guy at length I have no doubt in the validity of his case. I can say, hand on heart that while the children may have played up for the cameras at times, I have no doubt it is a genuine account.

As author Guy Playfair puts it “Neither I nor anybody else can explain what a poltergeist is, I can only tell you what it does. Whatever it eventually turns out to be would appear to us today as strange, unbelievable and impossible as, say, the idea of an internet would have appeared to Newton or even Einstein.”

The striking thing about the Enfield case is the amount of witnesses, particularly that of two police officers who gave their testament. In Paranormal Intruder, we have over thirty witnesses to our case, many of them professionals, including many of my own police officer colleagues, who provided their testament at the end of the book.

The Secret Behind Don’t Turn Around

Don’t Turn Around – The Countdown Begins!

There’s just two days to publication for the first in the DC Jennifer Knight series, and I can’t wait! Early Goodreads reviews have been amazing, and lots of people have pre-ordered the book already. This week I was thrilled to receive my paperback copies, and I’m sure you can tell by my happy face pictured below that it was quite a momentous occasion.

The Secret Behind Don’t Turn Around

What you may not know is that there is a secret behind the inspiration for the DC Jennifer Knight series. I am also a police officer, and like my main character, I have also experienced the terrifying world of the paranormal. Don’t Turn Around is set in the fictional town of Haven, a place where nothing ever happens, apart from the usual petty crime. Jennifer complains she is bored, but she soon regrets her words as she is flung into a world where nothing is what it seems.

Just like Jennifer, I was thrown head first into the paranormal. Suddenly our house became a playground for an unknown entity that had the power to smash our crockery, throw knives, light fires, growl, moan, and physically prod and scratch. Sound far fetched? Perhaps. But it happened to me, and it prompted me to write my true story, Paranormal Intruder.

Terrifying Events

Writing my true story was harrowing, and there were chapters I wrote with tears in my eyes as I recounted the terrifying series of events. But as time went on, my husband and I learned to deal with what was happening. Writing my story was one of the things that helped me to cope. Paranormal Intruder was published, but I did not stop there. I imagined how much more fun it would be to write a fiction series, with a character I could empathise with, to weave my own experiences of the police and paranormal into the story.

DC Jennifer Knight is completely unprepared for what happens to her, just as we were, and there are times she feels very alone as she doesn’t know who to trust. Like us, she meets people who don’t believe her, but as we did, she also finds her true friends, people who believe her long before they see it with their own eyes.

Don’t Turn Around is mainly a crime thriller with paranormal threads running through it. Crime readers have said it is a mix they would never have considered before, but are now hooked. Paranormal readers found the crime element intriguing. At only 99p to buy on Amazon, you can’t lose.

Here are some of the fantastic reviews we’ve earned so far:

From the first line it had me hooked. Renita D’Sylva, Bookouture Author

Don’t Turn Around by Caroline Mitchell is a completely new take on police procedurals. She combines both her knowledge and skill of police work with the dark, frightening world of the occult. DC Jennifer Knight is a brilliantly written character who battles to investigate a series of seemingly unrelated deaths, with one foot in each camp. The daily grind of being a police officer is skilfully interwoven with her chilling beyond the grave experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more about DC Jennifer Knight. – Lisa Cutts, crime author

If you like your crime books dark, creepy, engaging and with a touch of the supernatural then this is for you.- OMG That Book.

This is a fantastically written story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really didn’t want to put it down and was gutted when it ended. – Dawn Carol Taylor

Veiled in unseen danger and untouchable panic, Don’t Turn Around was absolutely fascinating. With a brilliant cast of crime characters, and a plot that was enough to make me feel dizzy, this was a compelling book that I just couldn’t get enough of. – Becca’s Books

Announcement – Don’t Turn Around

I am thrilled to announce my new crime thriller Don’t Turn Around is available to pre-order on Amazon right now!

I never thought when I first penned my true story ‘Paranormal Intruder’ that I would continue to write, much less be signed by a successful publisher such as Bookouture.

I am happy to have been able to infuse my personal experiences in the police and paranormal to bring you ‘Don’t Turn Around’ the first in the DC Jennifer Knight series. My views of the world were turned upside down when I first encountered our real life paranormal intruder, and when writing my second book I wanted to bring my readers upon a journey into a world where nothing is what it seems.

You don’t know him. But he knows you.

Soon he would be able to touch her, to feel the warmth of her blood. And when the time came, nothing would stop him.
As D.C. Jennifer Knight investigates a routine stabbing in the quiet town of Haven, she is shocked at what seems like a personal message from beyond the grave.

When more bodies are found, Jennifer is convinced the killings are somehow linked. What she discovers is more chilling than she could possibly imagine. The murders mirror those of the notorious Grim Reaper – from over twenty years ago. A killer her mother helped convict.

Jennifer can no longer ignore the personal connection. Is there a copycat killer at work? Was the wrong man convicted? Or is there something more sinister at play …

With her mother’s terrifying legacy spiralling out of control, Jennifer must look into her own dark past in a fight not only to stop a killer – but to save herself and those she loves.

A heart-stopping supernatural thriller to engross fans of Rachel Abbott, Paul Finch and James Oswald.

Paranormal Intruder – The Video Trailer

The Video Trailer

After experiencing four years of paranormal activity in our home, one of our biggest priorities was sharing our story with the world. As any self published author will tell you, unless you have limitless funding it can be a real struggle reaching new readers after the initial launch.

I had thought about creating a book trailer for ‘Paranormal Intruder’ for some time. It’s not the cheapest method of marketing, and doesn’t always impact directly on sales, but it’s a great way of telling your story in the space of a minute or two. Of course, encapsulating four years of activity and all our emotions into a minute of video is a very tricky prospect – but here it is!

EVP Sounds

I can’t take the credit for its production. Captcha Studios came highly recommended and made the whole process a breeze. I sent them bullet points of what I wanted included, alone with some of our EVP sounds and after a few trial runs, they came up with the perfect video for our story. I’m very pleased with the results and we have already gained a couple of thousand viewings through various social media network sites.

The Spectral Times

I’m also very pleased to say that from the next edition onwards, I’m writing for ‘The Spectral Times’ Paranormal magazine. It’s a great way of keeping readers up to date with our case and finding out about other interesting supernatural occurrences. I was also delighted to discover our story had been given a three page feature in the journal for the ‘Society of Psychical Research’. The SPR was first established in 1882 and has consisted of many respected members in the field of psychic research, so we are thrilled our book has been featured in their journal.

Out of all the exposure we have received in the last year since publication we are most grateful for word of mouth. We would never have made it without the support of our followers, tweeters, listeners, readers and newsletter subscribers. Thank you everyone, you made it all worthwhile.

We love to hear from you! Please add comments, questions and stories.

Followed By An Entity

Followed By An Entity

What I am about to tell you requires an open mind. There are times I struggle to comprehend being followed by an entity, and I see it first hand. If you have read our book then you will already know that our ‘haunting’ occurred outside our home as well as in it. I completely understand that people find it hard to believe and I’m not trying to convert anyone, but we have been completely transparent so far and I’m not going to stop now.

Not Alone

We have discovered that when we go on holiday we are not alone, as our uninvited guest seems to come with us too. I posted previously about my husband Neil going away for the weekend with his friends to Costa-Del-Sol, when they were eating at the table and discovered their cutlery bending as they were using it. I was shocked to see it happen again.

While in Turkey with two of our children, we were sitting in the resort restaurant, enjoying the all-inclusive dessert. It was a lovely resort, and nothing seemed amiss. I was chatting to Neil and as he slipped the spoon into his mouth, then pulled out the spoon and looked at it comically. ‘Look what’s happened to my spoon!’ he whispered. Laying the dessertspoon on the table, we both gasped. The thick heavy spoon was curved completely out of shape. Rifling through my bag, I grabbed my iPhone and quickly snapped two photos before unaware staff cleared the table. I was very tempted to bring the spoon home but was conscious that it would amount to stealing, and I don’t think they would have accepted the explanation I was likely to give them should I be caught smuggling it out of the restaurant!

SpoonAs you can see from the picture, another dessert spoon is placed beside it for comparison. The cutlery was not light or flimsy either, it would have been very difficult to bend. We were surrounded by waiters, people, and it was a very busy area. The spoon was normal when he picked it up and bent seconds later. Neil was also scratched three times during our holiday, twice when he was entering the sea for a swim on his upper thigh. He was only just getting into the water at the time and the water had been up to his knees.

Strange Phone Call

There was another strange incident which unsettled me. I don’t know for sure if it was paranormal but it bugged me enough to keep me awake that night. Our resort was very large and after attending the evening show with the children, I was unable to find Neil at the bar as he had decided to give it a miss. I hate using my mobile on holidays but he had the room key so I quickly rang his phone to find out where he was. It answered and his voice spoke on the other end. There was a lot of strange background noise which is hard to explain, but I started talking and the voice responded saying ‘AlNeil … AlNeil … AlNeil’ three times. It creeped me out a little, and when the voice did not respond to my questions I hung up the phone. The thing is, it sounded exactly like Neil on the phone. I then bumped into him and he knew nothing about the call, although it registered on his phone. We had not been drinking either, by the way so I can’t blame intoxication. I don’t know what it was and perhaps there was an innocent explanation for the phone call but I guess it’s worth mentioning in case anyone has any answers. Thankfully the rest of our holiday was uneventful, and things have been fine in the house upon our return. I can’t help but hope we have left our ‘guest’ in Turkey but I doubt we will be alone for very long.

Have you got any questions observations or comments? Have you ever experienced anything like this? We welcome all (non abusive) feedback.

Paranormal Intruder – Life Is Not A Movie

Our True Story

It has been nine months since we made the decision to come out with our true story about our ‘Paranormal Intruder’. The support I have received is amazing, not to mention my base of followers on Facebook,  which is now hitting 8,000 people. It goes to show there is a huge following in the paranormal, and apart from a few negative comments which is to be expected, everyone has been very supportive. I love when I hear from people who thank me for raising awareness by coming forward with our true story. Initially I expected to reach a few hundred people. Selling 10,000 books within six months has been amazing, and I cannot put into words how much it has meant to us, being able to get our story out to all corners of the globe.

I’ve heard from solders serving in Afghanistan, readers in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, England, Ireland and other far off places. I’m so grateful for the positive reviews I’ve received, it makes my day. There are sometimes negative comments too, and people are certainly entitled to their opinion. While I understand that people want answers, or get bored with repetitive occurrences,  life isn’t a movie, and believe me, we would like nothing better than to tie up the end of our book with a bow and complete our story. The truth is, we are still searching for answers.

Second Edition

We’ve never pushed our personal opinions with regards what we think the entity is, because we simply do not know. People have asked how on earth we could go from being terrified of the entity to communicating with it. I blame myself for not portraying the length of time between our initial occurrences, to the communication in the pub over the course of three years. I plan on releasing a second edition of our book to bring it up to date, and will be taking readers views into account. I won’t distort the truth – I haven’t up to this point, so I’m not going to start now – but I will portray the timeline better, to help people understand that events occurred over a prolonged period of time.

Lately I have heard from a number of people that the area we live in was once a witches coven, and there have always been problems on the land where our new home has been built. I’ve heard about previous houses on this land being haunted, and priests being called due to the amount of activity here. However I need solid evidence. Newspaper articles or witness reports from people who have personally experienced activity would go a long way towards this line of enquiry. I often wonder if the entity that has been with us for so long would stay in our home if we moved away. It has certainly proven it is capable of travel, as far fetched as it sounds.

Deadly Suspect

In the meantime I’ve been busy writing my next book, which I plan to release soon. I’m very excited at the prospect of publishing my first fiction novel, ‘Deadly Suspect’  and I hope my readers like it as much as our true story. Given my experiences, I believe I’m in perfect standing to write it, and I can’t wait to share it with you all. I have some great plans for promoting both my books this Halloween, so watch this space.

Have you read ‘Paranormal Intruder?’ Are there any changes you would like to see in the second edition of our book? We love to hear from our readers, please leave your comments below.

Paranormal Intruder – and the story goes on

Four Years Later

Who would have thought that four years since our journey into the unknown began, paranormal activity would still be ongoing in (and out) of our home. I mean, seriously? After all this time? We must have broken a record or something! I’m at the stage where I have to joke about it, as I can’t face the other option, which is to cry. I’m a glass half full girl, but I admit that there have been times when my optimism has been severely tested.

Facebook Updates

Lately I have started keeping a record of occurrences on Facebook and Pinterest. I was a bit worried about doing so, as I did not want people to say I’m only doing it to sell books, or am just crazy for an exceptionally long period of time! It’s not been the case at all. When you are victim to such strange goings on, even your most supportive friends don’t want to hear about it all the time. It’s not professional in your line of work, it ‘creeps them out’ or they just want to talk about something different for a change. Sharing with Facebook supporters really is amazing as they never tire of hearing about the latest occurrences, and are always on hand to give you a cyber shoulder to cry on when things get tough.

It never ceases to amaze me just how much ‘Para-Unity’ there is on my Facebook page. When it comes to empathy, these guys have it in buckets. I’m very pleased to say I have made some real friends there, and I wish I could convey to them just how much their support means to me. If you would like to hear about the latest occurrences, please do give my page a visit.

Onwards and Upwards

Onwards and Upwards as they say. So what’s next? Well, I’m hopeful that one day our true story will make it to screen. Whether it be a big or small production, I don’t care, I just want to see our story get out there to as many people as possible. I was very fortunate to have a conversation with the lovely Andrea Perron. You may know her as the Perron family from the famous movie ‘The Conjuring.’ (More about that in my next post). She was such a genuine person, and thanked me for coming forward to tell our story. We plan to meet up when she comes to the UK next, I’m really looking forward to it. My point is, that whatever medium is used, people coming forward with their stories can only be a good thing.

And Life Goes On

I have yet to post the rest of our EVPs online through my podcast, which I admit, has been sadly neglected due to the amount of time it takes me to do it. Never fear, I will always be active as far as our book goes, and judging by the amount of strange occurrences in our home, I will certainly not be allowed to forget it. As well as promoting ‘Paranormal Intruder’, I’ve been busy writing my next book, a supernatural crime fiction novel. I have my husband Neil to thank for that. If he hadn’t nagged me to write Paranormal Intruder, I would never have put pen to paper. Now I’ve gotten the bug, I can’t imagine not writing. One thing is for sure, writing fiction is a whole lot different to non-fiction. They both have their own challenges, but are very rewarding. All I can say is that I’ve certainly put my experiences in the police and paranormal to good use. I can’t wait to tell you about it, details will be launched very soon. I hope to publish in the summer, all going well, but the best laid plans and all that!   Talk to me…Have you read Paranormal Intruder? We love to hear from our readers.

The Afterlife of Billy Fingers

The Afterlife of Billy Fingers

I heard about this book on Facebook and was intrigued by the synopsis. I found I could not put it down, and I read it in a few days. I was very moved by the story and contacted the author, Annie Kagan on Facebook. I was pleasantly surprised to get a speedy response from a lovely person that seemed very in tune with the world.

Not Your Average Story

This is not your average ‘life after death’ story. Unlike many books on the subject, the author has not had a near death experience. The story comes through communication with her brother who passed away in unfortunate circumstances. It’s an unusual concept I’ve not heard before, although psychics claim to communicate with the dead all the time, the author is not a psychic. She is just an ordinary person trying to come to terms with her brothers death.

“Turn to nature to pardon some of the difficulty you have to bear. Nature has more light than anything else on your planet.” – The Afterlife of Billy Fingers.

I have read the reviews for ‘The Afterlife of Billy Fingers’ and while most of them are good, there are some that criticise, saying it’s too hard to believe and the thoughts of someone sitting in the clouds looking down is ridiculous. What I would say to these people is that they are taking it too literally, and looking at it from the viewpoint of where they are now. I dare say Annie seen her brother that way, but it didn’t actually mean he was physically sitting in a cloud like a genie. I take it to mean that it’s how she interpreted it, just as psychics are shown things and given messages, it doesn’t mean it in a literal sense, it’s how it was shown to them. People need to stop thinking as they are and think with the mindset that anything is possible. Maybe not in our physical narrow minded earth view, but in the broader sense as we are when we pass on. I feel we are very much blinkered in this life and it’s only when we open our minds and our perspectives that we experience much more.

Paranormal Intruder

While the experiences conveyed in my book ‘Paranormal Intruder’ were frightening and much more literal – chairs physically moving, knives being thrown – I also encountered some positive spiritual experiences, some too difficult or personal to put into words. I commend Annie Kagan for being brave enough to come out to the world with her story. I know it is not easy, but I am happy to see she appears to have a lot of support. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the afterlife, spiritual people, or those with a very open mind. Personally, I believe when we pass on we are initially treated in line with our own spiritual beliefs, so no two experiences may be the same. Having said that, most of the books I have read all have a common theme of love, energy and a positive presence, which is very comforting indeed. There are some real gems in this book and it is well written. I will no doubt read it again.
